This 2-day workshop is designed to teach you the basics of content design. Structured in a show-then-do format, you’ll learn the principles of content design that you can reuse in any content you create. Whilst this workshop does touch on user research and designing with data, the main focus is to equip you with the skills to create and deliver content that works for your audience.
Day 1: Learn the basics
You will:
- understand what content design is and why it matters
- learn about user behaviour and how content is consumed and processed
- learn about cognitive load, mental models, and scanning patterns
- identify pain points and convert them into actionable user needs, job stories, and success criteria
- develop a consistent language to discuss content problems in a safe and targeted way
- learn five ways to organise content
- complete a card sorting user research exercise
Day 2: Create, test, and iterate content
You will:
- develop content for a small website and app, including user interface labels, information, help text, and confirmation messages
- peer review content using your new language to identify opportunities for content improvement
- learn key web content accessibility guidelines so your content is accessible for everyone
- test your content with users through task-based product testing and developing a feedback loop
- iterate your content based on evidence
- present your work in a compelling way to storytell with data
